Landscape painting has a rich and lively tradition. Painting en plein air (in the open air) allows artists the opportunity to capture the light, color, and feel of a place. Our site affords us stunning vistas, abundant in beauty and richness. We will explore how to capture this beauty on canvas. Using smaller thumbnails studies, we will explore what makes an interesting composition, creating depth and foreground interest. You will learn how to manipulate paint successfully, how to mix color, and how to create depth and richness in your paintings. Participants will explore techniques like direct painting, impasto, and glazing, and will learn about linear and atmospheric perspective. Students can use either acrylic or oil paint. Acrylic paint is more forgiving (it dries more quickly), allowing for correction and application of faster glaze (transparent) layers. Oil paint is more challenging to use as it has a longer drying time, but allows for very rich surfaces (probably best for those who are somewhat experienced).
