Create a mold to make “reproducible” clay low relief sculptures. Bring a picture to class of an image you want to carve and reproduce in clay. You will trace the image onto balsa foam board, which is easy to carve but holds intricate detail. Students will explore which areas should be carved with greater and lesser depth, considering the effects of reverse carving, and then carve the boards into molds. We will press clay into our molds, creating our own sculptural forms that project very little from the background. These sculptures will be attached to vessels or other base fixtures constructed in class.
Carve a mold and create low-relief sculptures that can be added to clay projects.
