Casting and carving plaster to create sculpture is profoundly different in interesting ways from the additive process usually used to create clay sculpture. The artist is forced to plan ahead and to visualize the final form as already inside the plaster from the beginning. This workshop will include mixing and pouring the plaster, selecting containers of cardboard or other materials for casting, planning and sketching the envisioned piece, and experimenting with a variety of carving tools. All of these processes lead up to our final carving of bas-reliefs or three-dimensional sculptures out of the plaster.
Learn the fascinating subtractive process of carving as you create your own sculpture.
